Hilbert's axioms

First contribution in a Festschrift

David Hilbert's Grundlagen der Geometrie appeared on 17 June 1899 as the opening contribution in the Festschrift celebrating the unveiling of Göttingen's Gauss–Weber monument, published by Teubner in Leipzig.

Hilbert had reworked material from his 1898–1899 Göttingen lectures for it. The sources consulted do not document a dramatic same-day reception.

Nineteen axioms, in five groups

The published system organised Euclidean geometry around primitive objects and relations governed by axioms, rather than definitions resting on their intuitive spatial meaning. Points, lines and planes were left undefined, and the axioms constrained their relations.

The original system contained 19 axioms in five groups — incidence, betweenness or order, congruence, parallels and continuity — and the continuity group contained only an Archimedean axiom.

The familiar total of 20 describes a later amended system; the Completeness Axiom was not part of the 1899 continuity group.

"Created modern geometry" is overreach

The work used models to investigate consistency and the independence of axioms, helping make the logical relations within geometry an explicit object of study.

Calling the day the moment Hilbert created the modern concept of geometry is interpretive overreach. It transformed the axiomatic treatment of geometry while building on a tradition running from Euclid through nineteenth-century foundational research.
