The small hours of 7 September 1566
Suleiman I died in his imperial tent at the Ottoman camp near Szigetvár, probably between 1 and 2 a.m. on 7 September 1566.
The elderly and already ill sultan had reportedly been in agony for several days while the month-long siege continued. Scholarship supports death from illness but not a securely diagnosed disease, and the conventional birth date that makes him 71 rests on a birth year that is not entirely secure.
Sources variously date the death to 6 September, the night of 6–7 September, or the first hours of 7 September. The early-hours reconstruction is supported by recent archival and archaeological scholarship.
The death nobody was told about
Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha and the sultan's inner servants concealed the death to preserve military discipline and permit an orderly succession. It was reportedly kept secret for 48 days.
Around noon that same day, fortress commander Miklós Zrínyi led the surviving defenders in their final sortie, unaware that Suleiman had died hours earlier. Zrínyi was killed and Ottoman forces completed the capture.
The imperial tent stood about 4.5 kilometres from the castle.
A succession managed at a distance
Prince Selim was not at Szigetvár. Sokollu sent him the news, after which Selim hurried to Istanbul to receive allegiance.
Contemporary chronicles disagree over whether his arrival and enthronement occurred on 21, 23, 24 or 30 September.
A contemporary-derived account describes a coffin concealed in a specially ordered litter while the campaign continued outwardly in the dead sultan's name.

Date disputed. Sources disagree; the research places it at ~1566-09-07.
What the sources leave uncertain
- Sources variously date Suleiman's death to 6 September, the night of 6–7 September, or the first hours of 7 September. The early-hours-of-7-September reconstruction is supported by recent archival and archaeological scholarship.
- The conventional birth date makes Suleiman 71, but his exact birth year is not entirely secure.
- Specific diagnoses such as dysentery or gout occur in later accounts; 'illness' or 'natural causes' is safer.
- Some chronologies end the siege on 7 September and others on 8 September, so saying he died exactly 'the day before the end' is convention-dependent.
