Poland's famous baptismal date is calculated from an Easter calendar. No medieval writer recorded 14 April.

A date reconstructed from the liturgy

Polish annalistic tradition records that Mieszko, ruler of the Polans, was baptized in 966. It does not supply 14 April.

That day is reconstructed because it was Holy Saturday in 966, and the Easter Vigil was a customary occasion for adult baptism. No surviving written source confirms it.

Even the year has been reconsidered: Tomasz Jurek has argued for 965.

Where, and by whom, are unknown

The place and the officiating cleric are not recorded. Poznań, Gniezno, Ostrów Lednicki, Regensburg and an imperial court have all been proposed.

One current scholarly reconstruction places the baptism in spring 966 — perhaps 14 April, perhaps Pentecost on 4 June — probably somewhere in Greater Poland, while another scholar argues for a baptism at an imperial court outside Mieszko's territory.

Thietmar's later account credits Mieszko's Christian wife Dobrawa of Bohemia with working to convert him, but Mieszko's own motives are not securely recorded.

One ruler, not a country

The person baptized was Mieszko, and probably members of his immediate entourage — not an entire population in one ceremony. Their identities and number are not recorded.

The rite made him and his baptized court Christians within the Latin Church, and he could begin sponsoring Latin Christian institutions and worship; conversion of the wider population was a prolonged process.

He already ruled an organized polity, and in 966 he did not yet rule all the territories later included in the Polish kingdom.
