What the Allahabad Praśasti actually says

The fourth-century inscription, composed by the court poet Harishena, retrospectively identifies Gupta as Samudragupta's great-grandfather, followed by Ghatotkacha and Chandragupta I. It gives the genealogy and no reign dates for the first two rulers.

It also shifts titles across three generations: Gupta and Ghatotkacha are called mahārāja, Chandragupta I mahārājādhirāja. That is evidence for a later rise in dynastic status, not proof of an empire already existing in 280.

The coins that were meant to settle it

A group of 106 silver pieces attributed by their publishers to Sri Gupta surfaced through coin dealers rather than an excavation, and both the attribution and the provenance have been challenged.
